The heat setting goes from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest. I haven't used it past 3 because that's plenty warm for me, so it definitely gets warm!The biggest downside which would prevent me from re-purchasing is the amount of non-heated blanket surface. There is about an 18" border around the entire blanket that is just normal, non-electric blanket. I didn't think it would be a big deal, but if I'm using it in bed I have to choose between warming my chest and warming my feet, because the heated section isn't large enough to do both. I'm not sure if this is common for electric blankets, but I will definitely keep it in mind next time I purchase one.
